It’s hard not to throw around the “r” word when talking about Owls. Along with Braid, Owls have shown us what a hiatus can look like what a band really means it (or seemingly dissolves completely), and they give a more substantial weight to this whole “emo revival” thing. Okay, I said it.
Tim Kinsella and the band released their properly titled second LP, Two, this March -- marking a 13-year gap after their self-titled debut. Two finds Owls moving in a more straightforward direction, and they favor the “indie” over the “emo” more often than not. In the years since Owls, Kinsella’s made some overtly button-pushing music with Joan of Arc and a variety of other side projects, but Two scales things back for a heady and mostly catchy guitar pop album.
Here's the track "I'm Surprised" off of the new album:
The band’s first and only tour was a one-off -- almost over before it started. It’s unclear at this point whether or not the reunited lineup will sport better longevity than at the turn of the century, but maybe it’s best to enjoy them while they’re here.
Owls will play Mr. Smalls Theatre on Saturday, July 12, with Hop Along, Glocca Morra and Run Forever.
