Charlotte Kemp Muhl and Sean Lennon, aka GOASTT
The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (known as The GOASTT) is a product of Sean Lennon and his romantic partner, Charlotte Kemp Muhl. The two, plus backing band, are on tour in support of the band's first proper album, Midnight Sun. They play Club Cafe this Sunday, June 22, on a night off from their role as support act for Beck on his Morning Phase tour.
As the son of rock's most famous/infamous couple, John and Yoko, Lennon has an extremely long shadow to escape from under. How does one go about creating a psychedelic rock album when your father sang lead on "Tomorrow Never Knows?"
Thankfully, Lennon doesn't shy away from his father's territory as he did earlier in his career. Midnight Sun manages to maintain a sense of fun throughout its 12 tracks without straying too outlandishly and losing the listener's interest. I'm reminded of Foxygen's nouveaux-spin on 60s psychedelic pop, but with the occasional Flaming Lips-style freakout. Listen for yourself: here's the band on Letterman:
Midnight Sun has received near-universal praise from critics. Mojo gave it 4 stars, and said that the songs "channel Bends-era Radiohead [and] Syd Barrett whimsy." I think the Boston Globe summed it up best when they called the album "an accomplished, enjoyable record from start to finish, regardless of references or lineage."
The show, unfortunately, has sold out.
