Excellent performance by Polica at Smalls Tuesday night. Two drums, a bass, and Ms. Leaneagh front and center. At one point she told the crowd "every time I get up in front of an audience I become more uncertain of what I'm doing." My girlfriend thought she said "more certain in what I'm doing." Whichever it was, it speaks to the underlying artistry behind the band. Their music comes from that most vulnerable of places within. But instead of succumbing to those vulnerabilities, they're put on display for the world to see. It was an intimate performance, and one of the better ones of the year so far.
A note: the setlist pictured does not list "Tiff." It must have been added at the last minute, because they definitely performed it, with bassist Chris Bierden taking Justin Vernon's spot on male vocals.
Another note: what was up with the lead singer of Reputante wearing a Cubs tank top? (The Pirates fell to Chicago 7-3 during the concert.) He certainly didn't seem too happy to be performing, or maybe that's just part of the shtick.
