|Animals as Leaders|
Instrumental progressive metal band Animals as Leaders play the Rex Theater this Thursday. Hailing from DC, the group started in 2007 as a solo project for lead guitarist Tosin Abasi. They've got three albums to their name so far and are touring in support of their most recent, The Joy of Motion, which came out in March. Most of the songs are centered around two guitars and a drum, with almost no bass.
Tosin is one of the best guitarists out there. If you've picked up a Guitar World in the past five years, you've read about him (or seen him on the cover). Metalsucks.net ranked him the second best metal guitarist in the world today. He's endorsed by Ibanez guitars and they've produced a signature eight-string for him. Basically, he's a monster. Listen:
There's not much else I can say. It's instrumental, it's heavy, and it's one of the best guitarists in the world. Steve Vai called the band “the future of creative, heavy virtuoso guitar playing.” If you need further convincing, skip ahead to the 1:15 mark of this video of Tosin performing live:
