Show Preview - Cursive with Alkaline Trio - 3/5/10 - Club Zoo

Cursive will be opening for the Alkaline Trio at Club Zoo on Friday, 3/5/10. There will be three sets this evening with Cursive up second. Cursive is still touring on last year's lp Mama, I'm Swollen. This is an excerpt of the previous review I wrote which can be found here:

Beginning with “From the Hips”, the maturity begins to shine through. This song begins slowly before catching fire at the 3 minute mark. The lyrics are dark and depressing: “We’re at our worst when it’s from our lips. Our words caused this rift and it’s as if the whole world has fallen in.” Then a follow up track “Donkeys” shows Tim K. beginning to question his own life, “But isn’t it time you act your age? You got a mortgage on your shoulders on a baby on the way.” Lyrically the album is dark and mysterious while showing a sense of mortality.

Cursive is also promoting a new single they have entitled "Discovering America" that is set for release on 3/9/10. All profits from this song will benefit the American Indian College Fund. This fund is setup to provide scholarships to Native American students through more than 30 tribal colleges and universities. The song itself tells of the abuse and exploitation of the American Indian community. The song will be available for download (Itunes, and through Saddle Creek Records.

Be sure to take a look at our previous show review of Cursive back in May at Diesel which can be found here and here. They put on a high energy and fun show which never disappoints the audience. Doors for the show open at 6:30p and the show begins at 7:30p.

Show Preview - Ticket Giveaway - Cold Cave - Garfield Artworks - Pittsburgh - 2/22/10 -

Cold Cave will be performing at Garfield Artworks on Monday, 2/22. Cold Cave is a 4 piece from the Philadelphia area with experienced members from some well known bands (i.e. Xiu Xiu). They play a throwback to 80's darkwave synth pop with a bit of a modern twist thrown in. They have been receiving positive review on their recent release entitled "Love Comes Close" on Matador Records.

"Life Magazine"

Lead Wesley Eisold has headed up his share of bands including Give Up the Ghost and Some Girls. Both were ventures into the hardcore and punk scenes than his new band. The early recordings for Cold Cave were done solo comprising a dark atmosphere with pop tones. The nine track album produces many a hook laden songs with mellow tempos. "Life Magazine" is a good example where you hear repeated riffs and distorted vocals that keeps the dead nodding. "Hello Rats" is another track where the vocals are a more discernible with a pumping beat and synth overlay. It's a very good album that is nice to hear from today's norm.

"Love Comes Close"

I have a pair to tickets to giveaway for the show. Just email me here for a chance to win. They should put on a good show.

Show Preview - Nonpoint w/ Cold - Altar Bar - 2/21/10 - Altar Bar - Ticket Giveaway

Nonpoint will be performing at the Altar Bar on Sunday, 2/21 at 7p. They are set to release a full length album on April 27th (title is yet TBD). Nonpoint is a four piece from the South Florida area. They play a blend of hardcore, alt-metal and have been doing it since 1998. Their last proper album was an acoustic ep that came out this past December entitled Cut The Cord. Their first single off their new lp is titled Miracle which a live version can be found below.

This is part of a review of the Cut the Cord ep.

The album opens with a hauntingly ethereal version of “What a Day,” with Broderick’s guitar sounding a riff that is somehow spacious, yet filled with such a heavy groove that one can’t help but bang their head along with the record. Vocalist Elias Soriano makes a seamless transition from the electric sound to the acoustic as he weaves in and out of the lyrical lines with a subtle confidence that grips the listener by the ears and pulls them into the song’s storyline. Aside from the dark harmonic grooves of the albums opener, Broderick showcases his classical chops on “Circles” and “Your Signs,” with the former featuring engaging arpeggiated chordal lines by the classically trained guitarist.

"Hands Off" Live (can be found on the new acoustic ep)

I am giving away a pair of tickets to the show. All you have to do is email me with your name.

Concert Bypass - The Generationals

After shoveling the last few days I was able to actually sit down at the computer and browse concerts coming to our area. I was looking at The Generationals (who made my top 10 albums of the year) and saw they were coming pretty close but bypassing Pgh. They are supporting Apples in Stereo who are coming out with a new album in April. They hit about every city around us including Morgantown, WV. Interesting. I saw the Apples when they came to Diesel a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I guess they don't have the following here. Not sure. I would have really liked to see the Generationals again.
